36-Something Homebody Who Hates Exercising Seeks Same

Seeking:
  • A heterosexual male, mid-thirties, mildly depressed with manageable life problems.
  • A true intellect who is also not pretentious, doesn't brag about what school they went to and who does not reminisce about the glory days of being on the Ivy League Wine-Tasting Team.
  • Someone who is cynical by nature, appreciates dark humor and recoils at positive thinking platitudes and people who pauper success philosophies.
  • Someone who would rather stay in, have a drink, pet the dog and watch a BBC documentary on China's oppression of the Uighur people rather than go out to a bar -- without thinking that any of that implies that I meant "Netflix and chill."
  • Someone with a little rust on their silver lining – perhaps a hint of male pattern baldness or a poorly-executed career move, which I personally believe is charming, let alone character building.
  • ABSOLUTELY NO FEDORAS.
  • Someone who is not a yoga guru, success coach, author, musician or anyone who uses emotionalism and sentimentality to score with women.
  • Someone with a wide English vocabulary who doesn't ask me what certain "book words" mean.
  • Bonus points for being British or simply being obsessed with the BBC.
  • Someone with garden-variety quarks and imperfections that are obvious and visible and are of a tolerable nature (no well-hidden imperfections – you know who you are alcoholics).
  • Someone who clearly understands why socialism didn't/doesn't/and will never work and has given deep thought to their overall political world view.
  • Someone who is also religious. None of this "spiritual but not religious" bullshit. Grow up and develop a real world view.
  • Someone who didn't already "travel the world," but who is also still traveling the world - and who would like to continue traveling the world for the rest of their life, while also staying rooted and grounded in Atlanta, given its very convenient and affordable international airport.
  • Someone who can actually stand to be alone, who is not afraid of the thoughts in their own head.
  • Someone who does not root for a college football team for a college they didn't even go to.
  • ABSOLUTELY NO MARATHON RUNNERS, no men going through a phase that could remotely resemble the early stages of a marathon obsession, no obsessions with biking/triathlons/Iron Men Competition, etc. In fact, I'd prefer someone who hates to exercise. I'd take husky over someone working out their mid-life crises as a marathon junkie.
  • BONUS points for having skills in electrical, HVAC and/or plumbing - or having a truck, a ladder and strong arms that can lift and fix lots of stuff around the house.
  • Must love Jesus.
  • And Dear Lord, please don't be a Democrat.

That is all. Thanks.

Old School Ways That Just Worked Better

I've lived in the modern world here now for, oh - let's say a good thirty some years, give or take.

Granted, there's a lot I like about this day and age, but I have to say, there's also a lot I really just do not like.

Don't worry - I'm not going to throw out blanket generalizations that we, as a culture, are totally headed in the wrong direction or espouse dogma declaring that I've found the true way to do, be, and live.

I am, however, drawing attention to the fact that in this day and age, we have much more responsibility to ourselves and to others in the way we live our lives. The very heavy burden of choice is upon each and every one of our shoulders, and many times uncovering what's right and wrong for us - individually - in a sea of infinite possibilities, is a long hard, winding road of self-discovery.

That journey - we all have to take alone.

I've lived the high life, the low life, the slow life, and everywhere in between at this point. And today - with my new-found every other Friday off (with my new job) - I've been reflecting on this myriad of perspectives I've collected across all of the people I've been in this one life - and thinking about what has worked better for me when it comes down to lifestyles choices.

I thought it would be fun to put together a list of ways I've reverted back to an "old school way of thinking" - simply because those choices ending up working better for me in the end.

So here are a few lifestyle choices I've settled on after much analysis and much contemplation in my own effort to live a more fruitful, fulfilling life:

Do work that other people understand.

I have a philosophy: if your grandmother doesn't understand what it is that you do every day to make money, it is usually a sign that either:

  1. What you do is incredibly complex (as in mechanical engineering) -or-
  2. What you do uses a lot of big words that sound smart, but are really defenses to people who could criticize you or poke holes in your story and therefore, you have a lot of status anxiety.
  3. What you do is a too idealistic or a hard sell and therefore, you aren't sure if its going to get off the ground or make money.
# 1 is simply a personal preference, but to # 2 and # 3 - business isn't that complicated and people aren't stupid. Its a simple formula: buy and sell. Rather than trying to create needs, its just easier to find practical needs people already recognize and fill them.

Since I lack an ability in mechanical engineering or quantum physics, my general rule of thumb today is simple: if people don't understand what it is I do, I'm better off not doing it.

Talk on the phone.

I have to be honest here: I feel like I've developed something of a phone phobia from all of those dropped calls in the early days of cell phone usage which has made me 'one of those millennials' who hides behind text messages. Never having full bars or moving in and out of blackout zones has created something in me that is always anticipating when the call will fail or if I was actually heard. But I do want to overcome this - and mobile connections have gotten infinitely better, so I'm working on making that happen because I want to stop hiding behind text and connect more with the people I love.

I had a friend who purposely got rid of his text messaging service on his phone for this very reason... could I get rid of text messaging? Hmm... maybe not just yet, but I can certainly pick up the phone more often - like back in the day, when people used to talk when they had something to say. This one is a work in progress, but hopefully you get my point.

Business will always be about people.

I'm all for technological advancement, but look - you're not going to get ahead by automating every process, outsourcing jobs overseas, doing mass layoffs and otherwise alienating your most valuable resource - the ones who make the whole ship sail: your people.

Business will always be about people because people aren't going away anytime soon. People need work, people need to to eat, people need to buy and sell things to make this thing called Capitalism sustainable - so that its not a system that collapses like the Soviet Union's version of Communism.

And truly, in the world of social media, and always being connected, its the people who are still going to be there long after your job isn't. Your old co-workers, bosses, and colleagues are going to be your future references, you "ins" at a promising new company, the person who gives you a great review, the person who passes your name along...

No matter how much shifts and changes or advances in our modern economy, if Capitalism is to continue, it will always be about people simply because businesses, at their core, are nothing more than a group of people coming together to build livelihoods.

So I've learned this along the way: put relationships before jobs, because the people are going to be there after the job isn't.

Slow and steady wins the race.

I stopped buying into the "crazy-busy" American lifestyle around 2010. Whew, child! Been there, done that. Not interested in going back.

In fact, when you run the numbers: health/quality of life vs. money, it literally does not make much business sense to run at full throttle in the end. And when you really sit down to break your salary and all of those nights and weekends you're working down to you actual dollar per hour rate, its really not worth it. You usually realize what you're actually making is pretty close to minimum wage.

In demanding, high-stress jobs, you're essentially being compensated for a tradeoff: your inability to set boundaries and say "no." You're also theoretically being compensated for the degradation of your health due to stress, and if you're really lucky - you're being compensated for the 6 months to 5 years it will take you to recover from a full stage 12 burnout. And then again, when you look at the cold, hard facts of your per hour pay rate, you're actually not being compensated for that at all. You're kind of like an over-leveraged credit card really.

Crazy-busy American lifestyles are high-risk without a lot of gain in the end purely because the body was not designed to be a Super Man or a Super Woman. People are putting their bodies through an insane amount of stress with lifestyles that's will almost certainly attempt to correct and "realign" themselves through sheer burnout.

Not to mention that countless studies have shown that the true mark of "buying happiness" in terms of a salary caps out at $75,000 per year. Anything over and above that doesn't affect one's happiness.

What works better: slow, steady, gradual, paced, continual and sustainable growth and the character-building effects that come with living life at a moderate pace, which include patience, sacrifice, and endurance.

Get a wold view.

And by world view, I don't mean the vapid "think positive thoughts and good things will happen" or the "world peace is achievable" belief system. Will that really hold up when you ask yourself deeper questions like how could neighbors, who've known each other their whole lives massacre each other's children with machetes in Rwanda's genocide - or how could a pregnant women strap bombs to herself and hold a Moscow theatre hostage for days - or whether physician-assisted suicide is the best answer when cancer ravishes patient's bodies with excruciating, uncontrollable pain? Is it?

Its important to ask yourself these things - and find answers - long before you meet your maker. Because when you find those answers, it shapes your core: your value system that will guide you through the complexities of existence for the rest of your life.

It will tell you who you should date or marry to avoid making mistakes, how you will raise your children, how you will answer your children's questions about the world, how you conduct yourself in business and in life and the types of people you associate with. It will guide you in what kind of friend, sister, mother, daughter you will be, it will guide you in feeling compassion for other's struggles and having mercy on others and their shortcomings. It will guide you in finding significance in life... it will channel your energies towards what truly matters in your heart of hearts, it will ultimately define who you really are and what your legacy will be.

So get a world view - a real one with depth. Really, deeply look at the world around us - its beauty and elegance, its depravity and fallen nature - and ask yourself the very hard questions. And if you answers don't hold up, keep looking and don't stop until you find an answer.

Perhaps its time to stop being so dismissive of your aunt who talks so much about Jesus and maybe consider what it is that she's found that's so promising in that truth.

Get a world view through much research, prayer and contemplation. Its an essential part of becoming an adult because it will ultimately guide you at the core for the rest of your life.

Things take time.

Some things just take time - a lot of time. Its the antithesis to our world of instant gratification, but usually, most things work themselves out pretty well given enough time. Its one of those beautiful things in life - the way it unfolds over time.

I personally think that God works slowly. Very slowly. Its usually through much prayer and supplication that you find that things came together in a most eloquent way - a way you weren't expecting, and you really were given favor.

Having been through the whole New Age "woo woo" and superstitious phase of life, I'm always suspicious when things show up instantly wrapped in a pretty bow with the label of "synchronicity" - or by any means that could be explained by the Law of Attraction. I think a lot of times, in my own experiences, these "little breadcrumbs" were wrong directions or false starts that were cleverly deceptive in their ability to distract from something more enduring that is simply taking time in the background to come to fruition.

As a general rule now, I have to ask that if it came too fast or came too easily or too "coincidentally," was it really from God -- or should I wait?

There is beauty in time. The way the seemingly impossible is shifted and chipped off little by little each day, untangling and working itself out with a soft, slow-moving, unfolding grace... We forget this.

Modern life places a lot of responsibility on us.

In a choice-laden, boundariless, crazy-busy modern world, its really up to us to find and carve out our own parameters for living. It takes courage to feel around in the dark, bumping up against those places within ourselves - our values, our beliefs, our personalities and nature - that define who we really are and what we will or will not stand for. Thank God that on occasion, we actually hit a light switch.

What light switches have you hit upon looking back at your life? Specifically, what "old school" ways of being have you found that just seemed to work better when you actually put them to the test?

Furkids Foster Dog for Adoption

My sister Whitney and I are foster mums for dogs trying to find forever homes through Furkids - Georgia's largest animal rescue and no-kill shelter.

This is Miss "Anteater." She's a silly, happy-go-lucky two year-old dachshund beagle and some other mix - possibly whippet or chihuahua (the jury is still out). Nevertheless, she's got a little something of everything in her and we like to think that makes her rather cultured.

She is a lively, independent little girl filled with positive, bubbly energy. She feels right at home entertaining herself and playing fetch alone, but is also very outgoing, friendly and social with people, kids, and other dogs. She's extremely confident, loves being the star of the show and is a real ham. She's also loves exploring new places and spaces and is very curious and inquisitive about the sights and smells around her. She has deep, intelligent eyes that like to gaze longingly into your eyes, searching your heart and soul and thinking really deep thoughts. She was also a teenage mummy who had a litter of puppies several months ago. She definitely needed some time away from the shelter to lounge, pamper herself with peace and quiet (and a good bath!) and just be a kid again.

Contact the Furkids Alpharetta shelter (also known as Sadie's place) or write me to find out more about this little girl. Contact information below:

Documentary - "It's a Girl"

It's my dream to be able to adopt two girls from overseas one day. I never thought I'd be the kind of person to to say something like that, but God planted that seed in my heart a little over two years ago.

I'm of course not ready now, but one day I will be - I'm hoping that will be some where around age 2017/2018, when I've accomplished the rest of what I want to do with my education.

I spent an entire Sunday with tear-filled eyes after watching "It's a Girl" - a documentary highlighting the systematic elimination, abandonment and outright murder of innocent baby girls - simply because they were born "the wrong sex."

Warning: this documentary is very hard to watch, but its a very, very important one:

Unwanted, thrown out, cast aside... because they were girls. How can you even wrap your head around this? How can knowing this not haunt you?

Human lives are not dispensable. Human lives are sacred.

Cultures and institutions that devalue the lives of women and girls - the soft, bright, empathetic, life-giving forces of the world - are examples of absolute and utter depravity in a fallen world. There aren't even enough words to say how incredibly horrific this is - that we live at the hight of civilization in 2015 and this is still happening.

Its my hope that more people, including couples, singles, gay, lesbian, etc. - whoever you might be - will consider overseas adoption of girls through this film.

This has been one of the greatest tragedies throughout all of history for far too long and it must end.

Magic Friends

Almost five years ago to the day, I left all of those bright horizons I'd been running to out in Hollywood, CA. Sadly, I ended up leaving some wonderful people behind - including a very dear friend of mind: an all-around, ah-mazing woman named Angela.

Truth be told, I'm a very discerning person when it comes to friends. Very discerning. In fact, there may very well be people in this world who think that we are the best of chums, but who I haven't really quite made my mind up about yet.

While I can play the part of an outgoing people person, I am still very much an introvert: highly analytical, deeply introspective, and always observing. Behind all of those girlish smiles, hair flips and giggles, is a pretty sharp brain that is always scanning, always assessing you: your integrity, your morals, your motives, the way you raise your eyebrows when you greet someone - I'm assessing whether or not that was a real eyebrow flash or if you are trying to use body language tactics for some kind of ulterior motive...  Basically, I'm a suspicious type - always watching out for wolves in sheep's clothing, and that makes me, well, hard to really get to know.

What can I say? We are who we are. Its a part of my nature.

So when someone passes my meticulous screening process and I actually feel drawn to build a close friendship with them, it is always because there is something very special about that person.

Angela is one of those people. Of course it helps that she's an actress, singer, musician, yoga teacher, business woman and all of the above which makes her creative, fun to be around, and interesting, but I think more than anything, its because I respect her.

She never went to college, but she has extracted more wisdom from life and life experience than anyone I know. She's humble and really, really funny. She can observe herself from the 3rd person and laugh at her shortcomings. She also never seems to lose her sense of wonder and amazement, yet is firmly grounded in reality and anyone who can crack up with me about the fake "woo-woo" you find in Hollywood is already moving up my list.

She's an easy friend to be with. She's at peace in herself. Her emotions are not up and down, riding waves of blood sugar levels, but are constant, consistent, steady and change only according to context... when its time to be quiet, she's quiet; when its time to carry the conversation, she carries it.

She does what she says she's going to do. When she gives you her word, you can count on her.

She has a "plug and play" personality. You could drop her in a group of C-level executives and she'd win them over. You could drop her in another group of let's say, a really scary motorcycle gang and she'd win them over just the same. You could put her anywhere - in any subculture, any socioeconomic group, anywhere and she'd fit right in.

She doesn't speak negatively about anyone and I think because of that, she has a pretty drama-free existence. She doesn't take up your space or deplete your energy; in fact, she gives it you. She seems to give energy - its a little like she brings her own sun to your gloomy day.

She also just seems to have a lot of magic around her - mostly because she's open to the possibilities and I think that's what I love about her best. She reminds me that over something as simple as a 3 minute phone call, a layover or an email, life can change just like that into something so much better.

She left Los Angeles about six months after I left, sold everything, went to Moscow to do a show, and then decided she'd use her last little bit of money to go to Italy, where she met her now husband. And they lived happily ever after.

I've learned a lot from her. She is a very deep, bright soul - an incredibly special person.

And as life would have it, she and her husband are coming home to live in Atlanta! Who would have thought in a million years we'd be living in the same city again! I couldn't be more thrilled!

Life, huh? What a ride! This deserves a shot of Absinthe!

Mom, Look What I Made!

If you know anyone looking for custom-made gift baskets, I think I have a knack for this!

Here's what I designed for my mother this Mother's Day: I was inspired by some of the things I've been learning on what life was like in ancient Babylon.

I imagine this is similar to what noble women ate whilst they lounged about in their hanging gardens!

Oh, and she loved it!

Here's an amazing 3D tour through the Babylonian hanging gardens:

Beauty Secret: Potent Vitamin C Serum

When I was a teenager, I had to see an aesthetician for acne. During that time, I remember thumbing through some product literature and coming across a study on Vitamin C and its ability to reverse the signs of aging. The product information showed an aboriginal man who had been treated with this pure Vitamin C concoction and the before and after pictures offered evidence that it could definitely reduce wrinkles and hyper pigmentation.

The results, as they were depicted in the aesthetician's literature were dramatic. So it always stuck with me - knowing that Vitamin C had the potential to reduce the signs of aging.

I think most women know that Vitamin C has this capability, but what I don't think most people know (and I certainly wasn't aware of it up until a few years ago) is that Vitamin C is highly unstable and therefore, its difficult to actually deliver into the dermis at an optimum dosage from products you get over the counter. What that means is that all of those products labeled as containing Vitamin C that have been sitting on store shelves for any length of time - the Vitamin C content is not effective at all.

I did some research on the problem of Vitamin C's degradation and came up with an organic way to create a highly potent Vitamin C serum that would be potent and active enough to actually work. The catch is that you have to mix it in weekly batches as it only remains effective for 3-5 days at a time. You will also need to buy a dark/shaded eye dropper to keep the serum away from light and store it in a cool, dry place. Here's how to get started:

Buy a dark eye dropper with a small funnel, a bottle of pure rose water, a small bottle of vegetable glycerine, and dry, powdered Camu Camu capsules. Camu Camu is a cherry-like fruit from a tree in the Amazon and contains the highest content of Vitamin C found in any fruit on earth and is 40-50% higher in Vitamin C than an orange. You can order all of these ingredients on Amazon or at your local International Farmer's Market.

Note: you don't have to use the rose water in this recipe, but I use rose water for everything (face washes, etc) because it has natural antiseptic properties.

Mix 1/2 a teaspoon rose water, 1/2 teaspoon vegetable glycerine into a small glass dish. Open 1 Camu Camu capsule and mix in the powder. Wisk briskly and pour the mixture into the dropper using the funnel.

Voila! You now have a highly potent Vitamin C serum that's all organic that you can apply to your forehead, under eye area, and decolate. Because the glycerine gives it a moisturizing effect, its best in my opinion to use in the evening before you go to bed.

Again, this serum is not effective after 3-5 days, so please remember to create a new batch!

Also, be sure to drop me a line and let me know what you think! Did it brighten your skin? Soften some of the crows feet? I'd love to hear what you think!

Canva: The Best Free Marketing Tool Ever

Now that I've moved marketing to the background of my life in favor of working with organizations and information design, I feel I can go ahead and share one of my greatest marketing secrets.

And not only that, I'm going to tell you about this tool without even being an affiliate marketer, which means I wont get a commission cut off your purchases! This is pure philanthropy.

So here it goes:

Who needs to learn Photoshop or Illustrator anymore when you can use Canva to create elegant designs from templates for free? Yep, for free. Well, or for a nominal fee if you use their template designs.

Here's an example of a flyer I did when I was working on the Modern Living brand:

Pretty sweet huh? You can design social media headers, covers, elements, flyers, presentations - and other graphics with custom dimensions for like, no money at-tall.

I hope you'll check back often for updates!

A topic that I've been falling in love with lately and will want to write about is the Japanese philosophy on Kazien. Its a management and life philosophy used at Toyota among other notable businesses.

Its premise is that if you take small, incremental steps every day, you can achieve big results over time and in a much more sustainable way without all of the additional fear and stress that comes with its antithesis - massive action. Massive action is the popular notion that big action produces big results. But does it really?

The underlying question for me is "is it possible to change your life without fear?"

I'm experimenting with Kazien by intentionally stepping out of my comfort zone at least once on a daily basis.  Here is a great video on the topic:

Marketing Tips and Tricks

I just found this tool for sending video emails called Bomb Bomb and it is quite literally the bomb!

Not only can you build elegant video messages (which, as we all know, increases the likelihood of people actually opening your email), but you can also track email performance.

There's also a feature for building drip campaigns - meaning you can build a series of say, 3 emails and time the way emails are sent, i.e. 1 email every 3 days. Check it out!

Culture Moment: Georgia Nature Musings

[Journal Entry - Autumn 2012] Even The Leaves Are Letting Go

I spent all day outside at Arabia Mountain - listening to the wind, talking to the trees, watching Nature work her Autumn magic, just thinking: there's so much beauty and intelligence here. I'm noticing Georgia's flora and fauna has more dimension it seems, more depth... she moves you with the sway of her hips, weaving the light and the dark through her landscapes, something I didn't see often enough back in the Land of the Gods...

When life shatters you awake, you become obsessed with the idea of home. You talk yourself into believing that some vague memory of playing by the lake with your cousins on a warm, silky summer night is where you will return to - to a family with open, loving arms, restored to hope by the transforming power of tragedy. The perfect contrast to the concrete jungle, to the constant commotion, noise, and shallow people. I was going home. And people were jealous. Deep in their hearts they too longed for that home they couldn't return to. In LA, we were runaway children, united as Middle America refugees, and here I was, turning my back on the tribe. My self-seeking had prevailed; my life had been redeemed. I had a home that wanted me back, someone was missing me...

The truth was, I had no home to come home to.

But today, I really just let myself surrender - to this social orphanage, this starting over one more time, and to a new Nature I'd never noticed in such sharp relief: it was this part of her I wasn't ready to accept and didn't quite understand. I laid down atop a large rock outcrop, closed my eyes, opened my arms, and just died. I gave up all the old horizons I'd been chasing. I could breathe in the living intelligence all around me and I - emptied - asked it to show me her secrets - the tender and carefully placed paradox behind her scraggly tree limbs, her mossy pools, her neutral tones, and the beautiful creations she was so adamant about destroying.

I wandered back through some of my time with her....

I remembered how exciting it was to dare her in her fury as she threw her flashing whips across threatening skies, snapping and spinning the clouds on their axes... slowly lulling me into the hum of her dark spell, and secretly wanting her to unleash more of her wild downpours and whipping winds on our boring, pathetic lives... or how the first bittersweet smell of decaying leaves used to break my heart, reminding me that firefly light shows and cricket choirs don't last forever... ever revealing again and again the promise inherent in all her changes, and showing me that even the leaves can let go.... For some curious reason, I feel safer in her stormy, rocking arms than under the endless embrace of sunkissed skies... and I'm becoming aware that I no longer have that tired and weary child tugging at my heart asking, "can we please go home?"

She has more poignancy. She has a deeper, drumming prowess. Like a stealth panther, more moody and cruel, but it adds to her art, making her this vulnerable, yet violently passionate dancer. She has a wider range of technique and flow - an edge to her elegance, and I think that's what I'm finding more of now... this deep, unlimited depth, like the yins and the yangs that paddle evolution forward - where the old surrenders breathlessly in the undertow - the backwash of time - giving way to a greater expression of the new, reborn as a bubbling, zealous crest atop a mighty wave, until it banks again in due time..

I looked up at the plane in the sky from where I was laying and thought about the people up there, in their own little world - perhaps complaining about the in-flight service or putting the finishing touches on a power point or digging through their purse for a benzodiazapam. Their whole awareness tucked so tightly, like little pigtails, under their worldly helmets as they soldiered onward.... unaware of this great, expansive space I was losing my entire life to down here. Perhaps all of those gurus I met while walking labyrinths were right, I suppose. Maybe we do live in deep, cosmic pools of perspective. Some large, some small, dual here, non-dual there... but I'm glad I am finding more and more reflections in deeper and deeper pools. It will probably be my greatest gift in the end.

Autumn is all about surrender. It's like Mother Nature is delicately kissing her beautiful masterpiece goodbye by changing the color of the leaves and surrendering them to the wind.... I will follow her.
